Day 7. Vela Luka to Trogir

Day 7. Vela Luka to Split and Trogir: 34 km, 2 hrs 26 min cycling time.
Up at the crack of dawn to catch the ferry to Split, the second largest city in Croatia. It is really worth getting up early as the light on the water is so beautiful. The ferry trip took 3 hours and was really smooth. We had a brief look at the Roman emperor Diocletian's palace in the old city. Very impressive. We decided not to spend the night in Split as it was still quite early but to cycle on to Trogir, a beautiful historic village on a small island. It is connected to the mainland by a short bridge. We were quite concerned about cycling out of Split as it is always very busy and quite complicated to find the road out to Trogir past the Kastelas which were built in the 1500s as protection against the Turks.
We managed to find our way quite well thanks to Ian's excellent navigational skills. By chance we cycled down to the coast and found the cycle track which runs most of the way to Trogir along the coast line. There are 6 Kastels along the way. We had a look at K. Luksic which had allowed a great view over the bay behind Split.
We found a small apartment in the old city so could self-cater. Spent a while exploring the market with its array of different olive oils. (The Croatians claim that their olive oil is the best in the world).
