Day 5 - Wine Tasting at Lumbarda

Day 5 Wine Tasting at Lumbarda 23 km

Cycled 8 km to Lumbarda to taste some of their wines that are endemic to Croatia, GRK a white varietal is only grown in this region. There are only 7 producers in Lumbarda but unfortunately we could only visit 2 of them as the rest were closed - they only open in June.

We visited Popic where we tasted GRK and Pravic Mali. The GRK was the 2013 vintage and the Pravic Mali was 2012 and has to mature in the bottle, quite high tannins and acidity. The alcohol for GRK was 14,5 % which is really high for a white wine. The production here is low only,10 000 bottles produced. It was surprisingly good with a good acid / sugar balance. These wines are made to drink young and as Clive Torr would say "worth a walk to the fridge".
The other Winery was Zure where we also tasted the GRK and Pravic Mali. Both were exceptionally good. We ended up buying a bottle of GRK. This family are incredibly forward thinking. They have planted parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz and have made some blends. The most interesting being the Pravic Mali and Cabernet Sauvignon blend which will be bottled in 2015. It is already showing very well, looking forward to tasting it next year. They have also made a Shiraz/ Merlot blend.this has not been done in Lumbarda before. In addition the family run an Agro Turizam Restaurant . Everything they serve is caught, grown and baked with passion. All the fish are caught in the bay, the vegetables grown, pork and chickens are from the farm, the bread is homemade and all the wine produced is sold at the Restaurant. If you ever find yourself in Korcula this Restaurant must be at the top of your list of " to do" list.
