Day 14 - Rest day in Cres.

Day 14: Exploring Cres town.

Cres town, which has a strong Italian influence, is nestled in a wide bay protected by a slowly descending cliff belt. The people are fishermen, boat builders and farmers who farm mostly with olives and vines. Tourism is their main income and the Marina is inundated with small Italian restaurants.
The island is home to the White-headed Condor which come to breed here from Spain each year.
There are many beaches and camping sights and the bay offers a good stop over for yachties during summer. 
The historical town is a compact nucleus of interconnected houses, built using the same architectural and decorative elements. The town was established in the XV. Century and grew quickly to become the island's administrative and economic centre.
We cycled along the coast past the harbour on a lovely cycle path which eventually became gravel and is fantastic for mountain biking. The sun tried hard to come out, but sadly not warm enough to swim yet. We managed to flush a Squacco Heron from the reeds on the edge of the water as well as two Great Egrets wading in the shallows.
We stocked up at one of the fruit and veg stores with nuts, figs and dried cranberries to snack along the way tomorrow.
Supper was at Buffet Rotondo where we had the most delicious calamari and salad with house wine, a very good Malvasjia from Istria. This little restaurant is one of many along the waterfront. We can highly recommend it; the service is excellent and it has a lovely view of the marina.
