EDay 51: Jestetten to Bad Sackingen 71 km 4:02
It was rather chilly when we set off this morning on the V6 which took us on a varied route touching on the Rhine in places and winding along roads through villages. The Rhine is looking a lot wider now since the Aare river joined it at Walshut and is moving at quite a pace. It is 1230 km long as it winds it's way through France,Germany Switzerland and Netherlands.
While cruising through Rheinheim, we found a super little wine shop where we bought a bottle of delicious German Riesling from Stuttgardt, the Staatsweingud Weinsberg Riesling 2012 (WWS 9). It is the government winery where the viticulture students do the winemaking. An excellent recommendation from the owner of the wine shop.
We arrived at our overnight stop in Bad Sankingen in good time. All the cheaper accommodation had been taken due to the weekend and school holidays, so we were lucky to find a bed at Der Swartze Walfisch, albeit a bit on the expensive side.
This picturesque town is a stone's throw away from Basel and a short walk across the river, through the covered bridge, to the small city of Stein in Switzerland. At 270 m this is the longest covered bridge in Europe.
St Fridolinsmeunster from the 13 C dominates the Munster Platzs and can be seen from all quarters of the town as it reaches up to the sky. It was built during the time of the Roman Empire but it is Protestant now.
We bought two Brezels and strolled down to the banks of the Rhine where we sipped the Riesling, which was delicious. We both thought that this Riesling was true to its cultivar, a great expression of Riesling flavours and aromas.
As we were Schnitzelled out, we had the most delicious supper at a Greek restaurant on the square.

Great spot for a birthday picnic!
