Day 41 - Zaundorf to Koessnach.

Day 41: Zaundorf to Koessnach. 75km, 4:26.

Today our route wound through the fertile plains of the Danube and typical Bavarian villages, hugging the edge of the Bavarian Forest on a good cycling track that turned into gravel in places. Our bikes did well on this mixed terrain, there was even a little bit of single track!

The Lower Bavarian countryside is becoming more beautiful as we make our way towards Regensburg. The Danube is much smaller now without the contribution of the Inn and Ils rivers! The Inn is actually larger than the Danube. However there are still a few barges making their way on the river, not as many as we saw at Passau.

The route took us through Metten with its beautiful Benedictine Abbey, Bogen an ancient pilgrimage site and Straubing with Celtic and Roman roots.

While cycling through Pfelling we hit the 2000km mark, a real milestone and halfway through our trip! We are feeling fit and ready for the second half.

We did not make a booking for tonight, but decided to rather wing it. We found a lovely Pension, Gasthaus Pension Gross, in Koessnach very close to Straubing. There is a lake about 3 km away where we spent the afternoon swimming and chilling - my first swim, Ian had managed a quick dip in the cold Med in Croatia. On our way back we bought the most delicious strawberries, they are so tasty and juicy! Just what we need on a sweltering hot afternoon. Dinner was excellent at Gashaus Alter Peter 300 m down the road - a fitting celebration for clocking 2K.

A warning to cyclists. See what happened to the last one that tried to go to France.

Bavarian summer.

A milestone.

This is where we clocked 2000.

Halfway???

It was hot. Lunch time siesta.

More of our houses should look like this.

2K celebration treat.
