Day 15. Kahl am Main to Hochheim

Day 15. Kahl am Main to Hochheim. 75 km. 4h30.

The friendly mother of the chef and owner of our accommodation saw us off with much good advice. We were concerned about how to get to the other side of the Main and then into Frankfort, as the bridges are few and far between, so we thought we have to either cycle 6km back to a ferry or do a long detour around a massive power station. As it turned out there was pedestrian bridge close to Kahl to get us onto the cycle path. We then had an easy 35 km roll into Frankfurt, initially in the rain but clearing as we went on.

We found our way to the Bahnhof where Pat Devine and his friend from Nice, Andrew Moir, were waiting for us. It was good to meet up after talking about this trip for so long. We set off almost immediately (just had to buy a map for the Rhine section off the route). Back across the river we wiggled our way between factories and small farms. Much of the path was on gravel with lots of puddles so our bike gears were pretty gritty by the time we reached Hochheim, which is where the vineyards begun. Unfortunately it was ruhetag (rest day) so the wineries were closed.

We found a small Italian restaurant where we had excellent lasagne for supper in their cellar accompanied by a very ordinary Hochheim Riesling.
