Day 1 Prague

Booking the bikes onto the plane was seamless and we were relieved to be able to book them all the way through to Prague. The SAA flights to Frankfort were easy; we thought we would need to pay for the bikes on the next leg on Lufthansa flight to Prague but were in luck.

We arrived at Prague airport late morning and found a quiet spot to reassemble the bikes and bins for the big cardboard boxes. Then the fun began. The battery on my fancy gps was almost flat and initially it kept wanting to send us back to the airport. We struggled to find street names, and those we did, we couldn't pronounce or find on our small map. We eventually got barely comprehensible directions from a number of friendly and helpful locals. A supposed 11 km trip turned into 22 km and as we were about to reach our AirBnB apartment, there was a sudden clap of thunder, the heavens opened, so we arrived sopping wet and dripping.

We were met by our host, Slavka, who was by this time late for an appointment, so we had a very brief explanation about our surroundings. The apartment in a complex called Little Monastery, has been recently refurbished and is well-equipped. We do however need to catch a tram into the old city. The tram system here is fantastic - we never have to wait longer than 3 or 4 minutes.

After drying out, we had an evening stroll around the Old Town to get our bearings, buy groceries and a few essentials, visit the Tourist Info, cross the Charles Bridge, find the Old Town Square and the astronomical clock. Then back up the hill to the Little Monastery to cook pasta which we enjoyed with a local bottle of Muller Thurgau (WWS 6 at best).
